Agartala: The Tripura High Court slammed the National Institute of Technology Agartala for refusing to inspect a disputed building. Chief Justice M S Ramachandra Rao and Justice Biswajit Palit presided over the bench. They reviewed a letter dated August 27 from the head of the Civil Engineering Department at NIT. The school claimed its staff was too busy with exams and admissions to help. The court did not buy it.
"We are totally disappointed by the stand taken by the Professor & Head, Civil Engineering Department, National Institute of Technology (NIT), Agartala)," the Bench stated. Judges argued that a public institution holds a duty to assist the judiciary. They expect better from a school of that caliber.
The court shifted focus to the Tripura Institute of Technology in Narsinghar. TIT must now send experts to examine the structure. They have four weeks to file a formal stability report or technical audit. This case stems from a petition by Habul Sarkar and others against the State of Tripura. The dispute centers on a building permitted for residential use that allegedly operates as a furniture shop and godown on the ground floor. Petitioners claim the construction defies the B+G+4 floor plan. The court cited sections 130, 132, and 133 of the Tripura Municipal Act to demand accountability. The next hearing is set for October 7, 2026.
