Agartala: A surgical team at Tripura Medical College and Dr BRAM Teaching Hospital has successfully treated a two-day-old infant born with a severe birth defect. The baby, whose family resides in the Sepahijala district, was diagnosed with left-sided congenital diaphragmatic hernia before birth.

This condition occurs when abdominal organs push through an opening in the diaphragm and into the chest cavity, preventing the lungs from developing properly. Prenatal examinations identified the defect at 32 weeks, allowing medical teams to prepare a specialized treatment plan before the delivery.

The infant was born via caesarean section at AGMC and GBP Hospital on May 19 and moved immediately to the paediatric surgery department. Dr Aniruddha Basak led the team through a two-hour operation on May 20 to repair the diaphragm and return the organs to their correct position.

Hospital officials confirmed the surgery was a success, noting that the baby is recovering well and preparing for discharge. Experts highlighted that the positive outcome resulted from a coordinated effort between surgeons, neonatologists, anaesthesiologists, and the nursing staff within the Special Newborn Care Unit.
