Agartala: Chandamita Roy claimed the Best National Costume title at the Miss Teen Diva 2026 pageant in Jaipur. The win puts Tripura’s indigenous culture in the national spotlight.
Designer Yana Ngoba Chakpu, who runs Northeast India Fashion Week, created the winning look. The outfit centers on handwoven Debbarman (Tripuri) textiles crafted on a traditional loin loom. It pulls inspiration from the Nageswar, Tripura’s state flower, using dramatic wings to represent local resilience. Silver tribal ornaments, Indian coin jewellery, and red beads finish the ensemble. It is a bold mix of old and new.
State Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury backed the project to help promote regional tourism and arts. The effort clearly paid off.
Reflecting on the win, Roy said, "Representing Tripura through this costume was an honour. This recognition is a proud moment for our artisans and weavers, whose traditions continue to inspire."
Chakpu emphasized the deeper meaning behind the fabrics. She noted the design tells the story of India’s indigenous soul. "Every thread, every ornament, and every detail honours our artisans, our weavers, and the cultural traditions that continue to inspire future generations. This recognition belongs to every artisan whose craft keeps our heritage alive," the designer added.
The victory serves as a milestone for the Northeast. It proves that high-fashion platforms can effectively preserve heritage and fuel cultural tourism.
