Agartala: Tripura authorities have apprehended 3,705 foreign nationals for illegal entry since 2022, according to official data from the state Home Department. These arrests follow a surge in security measures along the state's 856-kilometre border with Bangladesh, a region frequently affected by cross-border movement and infiltration.

Bangladeshi nationals account for 3,463 of those detained. The remaining individuals include 227 Rohingyas along with citizens from various African, European, and Asian countries, including Nigeria, Cameroon, Guinea, France, and Pakistan. While most detainees have been repatriated after legal processes, 220 remain in custody across state prisons.

Chief Minister Manik Saha confirmed that Special Task Forces are now operating in all eight districts to address potential security threats, such as drug trafficking, terrorism, and organized crime. These measures align with directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs and have gained urgency following political instability in Bangladesh that escalated in mid-2024.

Border security remains a challenge, as 21 kilometres of the international boundary remain unfenced due to difficult terrain. In response, the Border Security Force has increased patrols and surveillance. Meanwhile, the Tripura High Court has intervened, ordering the state government to provide a detailed report on its anti-infiltration strategies within three months.
