Agartala: Tripura prevented 9,982 child marriages during the 2025-26 financial year through a coordinated state campaign. Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy announced the results in Agartala, attributing the success to collaboration between district administrations, law enforcement, and local child protection agencies.
Despite this progress, the minister noted that child marriage remains a recurring issue in specific regions. Areas such as the Sonamura subdivision in Sepahijala district and Kailashahar in Unakoti district remain primary points of concern. Agencies like the Tripura Child Rights Commission and local non-governmental organizations continue to run active prevention programs to address these pockets of risk.
Minister Roy highlighted the role of the state's Anganwadi network in these efforts, confirming that over 3,000 of the state's nearly 10,000 centers now have electricity. The government aims to electrify the remaining facilities by the end of the year to improve learning conditions.
Furthermore, the state has launched English-medium instruction in approximately 100 Anganwadi centers to meet requests from parents. Minister Roy said, "The transition is expected to ease the admission process for students seeking entry into Vidyajyoti Schools by helping them adapt to English-language education at an early stage." Officials remain confident that ongoing community participation will continue to drive down the state's prevalence rate for child marriage.
