Agartala: The Tripura government is joining forces with the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute in Kolkata to build a top-tier media school in Agartala. This partnership aims to strengthen the Tripura Film and Television Institute by boosting academic standards and practical training. Officials met on Friday, October 23, 2026, to map out the school's future.
Joint Secretary of the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Dr. K. K. Nirala, met with Tripura’s Information and Cultural Affairs Secretary, Kiran Gitte, and SRFTI Vice-Chancellor Santosh Ajmera. The group wants the school to lead in the Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics sector. Dr. Nirala warned against copying old textbooks. He stated, "TFTI should explore new approaches to film and media education rather than simply replicate curricula already developed and refined by established film institutions."
The institute currently runs two one-year post-graduate certificate programs in Screen Acting and Film and Video Editing. Four batches have already finished short-term training courses there. SRFTI will now draft a detailed project report to guide the construction of a permanent campus. Gitte noted that the state wants to help local youth tell regional stories that connect with global viewers.
This move is a massive push for North-East filmmakers. It builds a bridge to the creative economy. Ajmera confirmed that SRFTI will provide the technical muscle to make this vision a reality.
