Agartala: Tripura has reached a major milestone in its power infrastructure development, with 95 percent of an Asian Development Bank-assisted distribution project now finished. State Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath confirmed the remaining work should conclude by June during a review meeting attended by Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Chief Minister Manik Saha.
The state is also advancing its smart meter rollout, which is on track for completion by October. Officials have already equipped 355,158 consumers with smart meters, leaving 216,144 connections remaining. Other deployments include 159,013 standalone prepaid meters and installations across all 11 kV feeders and distribution transformers.
These infrastructure improvements have contributed to a significant decline in Aggregate Technical and Commercial losses, which dropped from 40 percent in 2018 to 18.23 percent today. While the state faces a 177 MW power deficit during peak demand, officials are addressing this through open market purchases while managing challenges related to gas supply shortages.
Several central government initiatives are also nearing finalization. Projects under the PM-JANMAN scheme are finished, while work under the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan and the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme are both expected to conclude by summer. Additionally, the state is working toward a 150 MW target for rooftop solar under the PM-Surya Ghar scheme and is upgrading the Rukhia gas turbine plant to increase capacity by 2029.
