Agartala: Tripura Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath has launched the Khet Bachao Abhiyan, a campaign aimed at promoting natural farming and environmental protection. Running from June 1 to June 30, the initiative aligns with a national effort to address climate change, rising temperatures, and soil degradation caused by chemical fertilizers.

The campaign seeks to increase natural cultivation areas while boosting oilseed production to reduce reliance on edible oil imports. The government aims to add 11,250 hectares of land to the current 5,550 hectares already under natural cultivation. This expansion will bring the state total to 16,800 hectares by the end of the year, involving more than 13,000 farmers.

Minister Nath encouraged public representatives to convert at least 25 percent of their own agricultural land to natural methods to set an example for the community. He advocated for a transition from chemical fertilizers toward organic alternatives like compost, cow dung, and bio-fertilizers. Currently, the state has 26,661 hectares under organic management involving over 26,000 farmers.

The government is also developing an Agriculture Roadmap that extends to 2047 to integrate science-based cultivation and modern technology. To support these efforts, officials are working on a Farmer Registry that will provide each grower with a unique ID, ensuring more efficient access to government welfare programs and benefits.
