Agartala: The Tripura High Court struck down a State Level Committee ruling that denied early release to seven prisoners. The convicts served between 15 and 21 years behind bars. Prison officials already backed their freedom. The committee blocked the release based on a Police Verification Report.
Chief Justice M S Ramachandra Rao and Justice Biswajit Palit slammed the decision on Monday. The bench acted on a suo motu writ petition. They found the committee ignored the rules. The court noted that a September 3, 2025, Home Department notification governing premature release contains no requirement for police verification. The court ruled the committee failed to apply the law properly.
The judges threw out the August 21, 2026, rejection order. They ordered the committee to review the seven cases again. The committee must follow the 2025 government norms. Advocate General S M Chakraborty and advocate Pinki Chakraborty represented the state. The court described the situation plainly, stating, "the committee had not properly applied its mind to the principles governing consideration of premature release."
The court set the next hearing for October 7, 2026. Seven men wait for justice.
