Agartala: The Tripura High Court slapped the state government with a final deadline to provide data on teacher vacancies. Chief Justice M S Ramachandra Rao and Justice Biswajit Palit issued the warning Wednesday. The court will take a serious view if the state fails to deliver the numbers by August 11, 2026. The bench initiated this public interest litigation on its own.
This case stems from a July 2, 2026, order requiring the Advocate General to file an affidavit on school staffing. The judges want a breakdown of vacancies as of May 8, 2026. They also demand clarity on which posts were filled or remain open. The court is leaning on reports from local newspapers regarding the state of education.
A June 15 report claims recruitment for headmasters, headmistresses, and inspectors stopped in 2018. The data suggests 4,668 schools, or 86 per cent of the total, lack a head teacher. The court also wants answers on claims that 118 inspector positions and 288 headmaster slots were axed. Another report from June 30 alleged schools often operate with only two teachers.
The court warned the government during the July 29 session. The order stated: "As a last chance, at the request of the learned Advocate General, list the matter on 11.08.2026 to furnish the data sought for in the previous order passed by this Court on 02.07.2026." Lawyers must now prepare the report before the August deadline.
