Gauhati High Court Reserves Ruling on Yaongyimsen Excommunication Case

Kohima: The Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench, finished hearing arguments regarding the excommunication of 38 individuals and their families from Yaongyimsen village. Justice Yarenjungla Longkumer reserved the judgment on October 13 following final arguments from all sides. The legal battle centers on orders issued by the Yaongyimsen Riongsanger Putu Menden and the Yaongyimsen Senso Mundang.

These village bodies stripped the group of their citizenship. The petitioners, who reside in Chümoukedima, formed an association in 1989 for villagers living outside their home district. Trouble began in 2021 when the village council demanded the group declare their establishment details. The dispute escalated quickly. The village bodies issued three specific orders on April 4, October 21, and December 10, 2024, to exile the 38 petitioners.

The plaintiffs took their case to the High Court. They argued that the ban blocked them from entering their own village and infringed on their rights. The petitioners contend the move violates "their fundamental rights under Articles 19 and 21 of the Constitution." The court previously issued an interim stay on the three excommunication orders in May 2025. Counsel for the petitioners, the village bodies, and the State respondents all appeared before the court prior to the final decision.
