Agartala: A Special NDPS Court in Tripura has sentenced three men to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for trafficking 9,500 Yaba tablets. Special Judge Sanjay Bhattacharjee delivered the verdict on Wednesday after finding the defendants guilty under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

The convicted individuals are 39-year-old Manik Mia, 31-year-old Madhai Shil, and 28-year-old Prashanta Roy. All three men reside in the Belonia subdivision of the South Tripura district.

The arrests followed an operation on October 10, 2024, when Jatrapur Police received intelligence about a vehicle moving narcotics toward Belonia. Officers from the Jatrapur Police Station and the Tripura State Rifles established a checkpoint and intercepted a Hyundai Grand i10. During the search, authorities recovered the tablets hidden in a yellow bag beneath the front seat.

Public Prosecutor Gautam Giri confirmed that the prosecution built its case by examining 19 witnesses and submitting extensive documentary evidence. Regarding the outcome, Giri stated, "The court awarded 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh each under Section 22(C) of the NDPS Act."

The court also handed down a 10-year sentence and an additional fine of Rs 1 lakh under Section 25 of the Act. These prison terms will run concurrently. If the defendants fail to pay the total fines, they will face an additional six months of incarceration.
