Agartala: Tripura Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath has officially launched the Khet Bachao Abhiyan to promote sustainable farming practices across the state. Running through June, the campaign aims to raise awareness about natural farming methods while encouraging farmers to increase oilseed production to decrease the reliance on imported edible oils.
The state government plans to expand natural farming coverage significantly. Currently, 13,875 farmers practice natural farming on 5,550 hectares of land. By the end of the year, the administration intends to bring an additional 11,250 hectares under this initiative, reaching a total of 16,800 hectares. Beyond these efforts, organic farming is already established on 26,661 hectares, involving nearly 27,000 farmers.
To support these environmental goals, Minister Nath inaugurated new Agricultural Development Research and Training Centres in South Tripura. He urged public representatives to dedicate a portion of their land to natural farming to serve as an example for others. He also emphasized shifting away from chemical fertilizers in favor of organic alternatives like bio-fertilizers and compost to combat soil degradation and climate change.
Looking toward the future, the government is drafting an Agricultural Roadmap extending to 2047 to boost farmer incomes through modern technology. Officials are also pushing to register all local farmers in the state database. To date, 63,784 farmers have received a Unique Farmer ID, a system designed to streamline access to government benefits and development schemes.
