Guwahati: The Tai Ahom Jatiya Parishad is pushing the Central Government for a 20,000 crore rupee flood relief package. This follows recent destruction across Upper Assam. The group finalized the demand at an executive committee meeting in Moran. A central delegation will soon visit the hardest-hit areas to track the scale of ruin.
Working president Dr. Dayananda Borgohain announced the plan. General secretary Amar Jyoti Arandhara, Tai Ahom Students' Union president Milan Borgohain, and working president Debajit Gogoi joined him. The group also issued guidance for the upcoming caste-based Census. They want Ahom community members to list their religion as Ban-Phi-Dam or Ahom Hindu. They also urged people to register Tai Axomiya as their mother tongue.
Separately, Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi rejected current government aid packages. He labeled the existing 15,000 and 25,000 rupee payouts as insufficient. He wants more. "The government should provide at least Rs 10 lakh to every affected family," Gogoi said. He proposed an initial 2 lakh rupee payment for immediate recovery, followed by phased installments.
Gogoi also flagged relief distribution problems. He accused officials of shorting victims on rice rations. While the state promised 8 kilograms, residents in some districts reported getting only 5. He demanded a formal investigation into these claims. The state government continues its relief camp operations, but critics remain loud. They claim the current response fails to match the actual devastation suffered by families.
