Kohima: The All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) hit the brakes on its planned protest this week. The state government finally took action to start the long-delayed construction of a 100-bed girls’ hostel at Kohima Science College in Jotsoma. Officials moved after students held a massive Black Friday protest on June 19 to demand results.
The Infrastructure Development Authority of Nagaland issued a directive on June 29. It ordered the Directorate of Higher Education to finish a project report using existing corporate funds. The government confirmed it will keep those funds locked for this build. It also plans to push through the paperwork needed to break ground.
Union leaders credited the win to their members. Kivika Yeptho and Sotilo Tep noted the victory in a press release. The student leaders stated: "The remarkable unity displayed by the students’ community reaffirmed the collective commitment towards safeguarding the welfare, dignity, and educational interests of female students in Nagaland."
The union warned that this pause is only temporary. They plan to watch every move the state makes. If the project stalls, they will bring the protests back. The students want to see a finished building, not just more government letters.
