State fails to block illegal Chandel bridge despite 2024 order

Imphal: A bridge project over the Manipur River at K. Molnom village continues despite a standing state order to tear it down. The site remains a point of intense friction in the Chandel district. Officials are dodging questions about why a directive from March 21, 2024, remains totally ignored.

The then-Deputy Commissioner of Chandel, Mayanglambam Rajkumar, signed the order to halt all work immediately. He cited a lack of permission from any competent authority. The site sits near the security-sensitive Sugnu-Serou area. The government feared the project would trigger unrest. The directive warned that "the construction was likely to create unrest and adversely affect the security situation."

That order commanded law enforcement and the Assam Rifles to step in and stop the work. It promised legal action against anyone ignoring the mandate. Nobody has produced a document to rescind that order. The public now demands to know if the state granted new permits or if the ban still holds. The government has yet to explain the current status of the project or why their own law remains unheeded.
