Shillong: Fernando Magallanes Mato, the Cultural and Press Counsellor of the Spanish Embassy in India, joined students in Shillong for a webinar on July 16. The event kicked off the Passport to the World project at Mrs. N. Hills Tiny Tots East Ville Secondary School. Talks zeroed in on the Spain-India Dual Year 2026, which honors 70 years of diplomatic work. Speakers looked at growth in tourism, culture, and artificial intelligence.
Institutional attendance hit high marks. St. Edmund’s College, BSF Senior Secondary School, MIT Meghalaya, and Delhi’s Shri Ram College of Commerce joined the digital session. Mato pointed to the Spanish Prime Minister’s February trip to India for the AI Impact Summit. He argued that tech now dictates economic and political alliances. It is a shifting game.
Students grilled the diplomat on job paths, Spanish culture, and exchange programs. The session wrapped up with a postcard-writing exercise. The school will send these notes to the Spanish Embassy in New Delhi. Academic Supervisor Bala Syiem praised the session for its real-world value. "These engagements allow students interested in Model United Nations and international affairs to interact directly with diplomats, providing practical experience in the field," she said. Organizers will keep the global lecture series running after this successful start.
