Shillong: Hill Crest Higher Secondary School cleared all future tuition fees for Abhinav Thakuri. Abhinav is the son of the late Sunil Thakuri. Sunil died trying to pull three trapped labourers from a well after toxic fumes from a generator filled the space. The man died alongside his brother, Umesh, while attempting the rescue.
School management sent a letter to the Meghalaya Paragliding Association regarding the decision. The move aims to support the family after losing their primary breadwinner. Sunil was not a member of the association, yet the group provided support to the grieving relatives.
The school leadership wants the boy to stay in class. The waiver lasts for the remainder of his time at the institution. Management framed the move as a tribute to the sacrifice Sunil made during the July 14 incident.
The school noted the necessity of community support. "While no gesture can ever compensate for the loss of a beloved father, we believe that educational institutions and society have a collective responsibility to stand beside families affected by such extraordinary tragedies," the school stated. Officials hope the act honours the bravery shown by the father.
