Shillong vendors face August 17 relocation deadline

Shillong: Street vendors in Shillong must clear out by August 17. The Town Vending Committee ordered all eligible sellers in Laitumkhrah, Dhankheti, Malki Point, Laban, Red Cross, Barik, Phannonglait Park, Lumshatsngi, and Rilbong to move into official vending zones. Stay or face the consequences. Officials will enforce the Meghalaya Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Scheme, 2023.

Prafulla Kr. Boro, the Shillong Municipal Board Chief Executive Officer and committee chairperson, confirmed the city finalized the list of eligible sellers. This followed a January 2024 survey and a vetting process for all vendor claims. The state government picked two specific sites on April 15: the SMB Parking Lot at Dhankheti and the Brightwell Bungalow compound.

The city finished building infrastructure at these spots. Move now. A February 20 government order declared the old street locations to be “No Vending Zones” to fix traffic flow and public access. Any gear left in these banned areas after the deadline will be seized. The notice explicitly warns that failure to comply will "invite action under the Meghalaya Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Scheme, 2023."
