Shillong: Prof. Jyoti J. Mozika of the North-Eastern Hill University Law Department will lead the National Law University Meghalaya. She officially starts the job in August. The position sat empty since February after the retirement of the school's first Vice Chancellor, Prof. Indrajit Dube.
Founding Registrar Kerpa Meida Lyngdoh Nongbri managed the university during the interim period. Mozika arrives with more than 27 years of teaching experience. She earned gold medals in B.A. LL.B. and LL.M. studies. Additionally, she holds a PhD in Law from the University of North Bengal.
The professor served four terms as Head of the Department of Law at NEHU. She has worked in various academic and administrative roles across the country. Her husband, Dr. Nitesh Mozika, acts as a Senior Advocate at the High Court of Meghalaya and serves as the Deputy Solicitor General of India.
Supporters hope her local ties strengthen regional legal education. The university expects her leadership to stabilize an administration currently under fire. Recent months saw a "spate of protests by students" at the campus. Officials believe her background will calm the situation.
