Shillong: North-Eastern Hill University teachers want the illegal shadow administration gone. The North-Eastern Hill University Teachers Association (NEHUTA) delivered a roadmap for reforms on Monday. They trust new Vice-Chancellor Prof SK Barik to fix the mess. Barik knows this school well. He served as a student, researcher, and teacher before taking the top job.
The teachers demand a legitimate Registrar-in-Charge and Finance Officer-in-Charge right away. They want the camp office shut down immediately. NEHUTA president Prof Lakhon Kma claims it has no legal backing under university statutes or UGC rules. He told the new leadership that the school needs a fresh start. Kma stated, "The association was encouraged by Prof Barik’s familiarity with the institution."
Staffing shortages plague the campus. Retirements have left gaps that the school fills with temporary help. The association insists on hiring for non-teaching posts and clearing faculty promotions under the Career Advancement Scheme. They also demand a regular Dean for the School of Social Sciences. Other key goals include hosting regular convocations and picking a regular Director for the ICSSR North Eastern Regional Centre.
NEHUTA targets corruption in construction projects at the Tura campus. They claim those jobs bypassed the Central Public Procurement portal. They want new tenders opened for those works. The group also asks for a transparent selection process for a part-time Chief Vigilance Officer. Finally, they want statute amendments to stop messy appointments for deans. Kma promised full cooperation to stabilize the university and revive academic research.
