Shillong: Yogamaya Ashram in Laban, Shillong, will host the Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026 this weekend. The festivities start with an Adhibasa Kirtan at 7 PM on Saturday. The Madan Gopal Sampraday from Guwahati, led by Gobindo Lal Brajabashi, also known as Ajit Babaji, will perform during this opening session.
The main event starts at 5:30 AM on Sunday. The Uday Asta Harinaam Sankirtana takes place at the ashram site in Three Pine Colony. Organizers will distribute prasad to all devotees after the event concludes. The ashram extended an open invitation to the public for the celebrations.
Separately, the Gorkha Association, Shillong, held a meeting on Thursday to mourn the lives lost in a recent tragedy in Lapalang. Members observed two minutes of silence for Pynskhemlang Mawthoh, Merius Khyriem, Briastar Kharmunuid, Sunil Thakuri, and Umesh Thakuri. The association formally recognized the sacrifice of the Thakuri brothers. They noted the gravity of the loss, stating: "The Gorkha Association, Shillong, in a meeting held on Thursday condoled the death of (L) Pynskhemlang Mawthoh, Merius Khyriem, Briastar Kharmunuid, Sunil Thakuri and Umesh Thakuri, who lost their lives in a tragic incident in Lapalang recently."
