MLA demands quick aid for families of Lapalang well rescuers

Shillong: Nongthymmai MLA Charles Pyngrope wants the government to skip red tape and pay the families of Sunil and Umesh Thakuri. The brothers died on July 11 while trying to pull three laborers from a well in Lapalang. Sunil was 34 and Umesh was 30.

State officials are stuck in a legal loop. They are debating if the brothers count as employees under the 1923 Act or if the families must sue under the 1855 Fatal Accidents Act. Pyngrope says the government should stop the delay. He stated, "The two brothers were the breadwinners of the family and made the ultimate sacrifice to save others."

The tragedy hit five families hard. Beyond the brothers from Nongrah Dongktieh, the other victims were 22-year-old Pynskhemlang Mawthoh, 35-year-old Rapborlang Nongspung, and 25-year-old Elka Shadap. They came from Thangsning and Umiew Maw-u-Sam.

Help is coming from elsewhere. Hill Crest Higher Secondary School in Rynjah offered a full fee waiver through Class XII to Abhinav Thakuri, who is the son of the late Sunil Thakuri. East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal confirmed that the Deputy Labour Commissioner is holding a formal inquiry. They are hunting for legal precedents to fast-track the cash payments.
