Shillong: Tura Government College took top honors at the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan music competition held Saturday in Tura, Meghalaya. Eight bands from local schools and colleges played at the District Auditorium. They competed under the theme Music Unites, Drugs Divide. The event pushed young people toward positive outlets instead of substance abuse.
Tura Christian College placed second. Tura Public School claimed third. Other participating schools included Stephen Memorial School, Tura Learning Sanctuary, St. Mary H.S. School, and Sherwood School.
District Social Welfare Officer Madona Onasis T. Sangma explained the goals of the initiative. Members of the A’chik Christian Musician Society introduced the lineup. Judges handed out individual awards to local talent: Amelia S. Sangma of Sherwood School earned Best Vocalist, and Raskant Ch. Marak of Tura Christian College took Best Bassist. Tura Government College musicians Wening Ch. Marak and Nik R. Sangma won Best Drummer and Best Guitarist, while Ayon D. Arengh of Tura Public School was named Best Keyboardist.
Chief guest and District Council member Graham Bell A. Sangma distributed the prizes. Organizers hope these creative outlets help students avoid the risks of addiction. They stated, "Engaging young people through music and other creative activities can provide positive alternatives while helping build awareness of the risks associated with substance abuse."
