Imphal: Joint teams from the Joint Co-ordination Committee on Wildlife & Biodiversity (JCCWB) and the Mayang Imphal Forest Beat Office cleared bird-trapping nets from the Khamenbi Lamyai wetland in Imphal West district today. The operation targeted paddy fields where locals reported poachers using nets and air guns to slaughter wild birds.
JCCWB active member Shrinibash Waikhom led the sweep alongside forest personnel. They seized multiple nets from the site and burned them outside the Forest Beat Office. The team discovered signs of ongoing trapping operations at several distinct locations throughout the wetland area.
JCCWB convenor Romesh Ningthoujam warned that illegal hunters face strict prosecution under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. He pushed for immediate changes in local behavior to preserve the region's biodiversity. "Let us love and protect our wild birds. Without them, humans cannot maintain ecological balance," Ningthoujam said.
The JCCWB plans to launch more raids across Manipur. Officials intend to keep pressuring poachers to safeguard local habitats and wildlife populations.
