Religious celebrations, book launches, and community condolences in Shillong

Shillong: Yogamaya Ashram in Laban hosts a day-long Uday Asta Harinaam Sankirtana this Sunday to mark the Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026. Activities start at 7 PM Saturday with an Adhibasa Kirtan. This session features the Madan Gopal Sampraday from Guwahati, led by Gobindo Lal Brajabashi, also known as Ajit Babaji. The main Sankirtana kicks off at 5:30 AM Sunday at the ashram in Three Pine Colony. Devotees receive prasad once the event wraps up. Organizers invite the public to join the festivities.

A new book hits the shelves Saturday at Karbi Hemtun in Laban. Author Hirolfsberg Rongphar, a PhD scholar at Assam University, wrote the work titled Khasi-Jaintias and Karbis: From Symbiotic History to an Ongoing False Dispute—Karbi Youth Festival as the Confluence of Two Communities. The 11 AM launch features Paiem Laborious Manik S. Syiem as chief guest and retired IAS officer Jones Ingti Kathar as guest of honor. KSU Assam University unit president Deivica Dkhar and Karbi Students Association president John Engti Kathar will also attend.

Community groups held meetings to mourn recent deaths. The Gorkha Association met Thursday to honor Pynskhemlang Mawthoh, Merius Khyriem, Briastar Kharmunuid, Sunil Thakuri, and Umesh Thakuri, who died in a Lapalang incident. The group noted the "supreme sacrifice of the Thakuri brothers" during the gathering. Members observed two minutes of silence. Separately, the Gorkha Secondary School Alumni Association met Friday to mourn life member Surendra Thapa. He passed away at a hospital in Kurseong. Attendees held a two-minute silence for him.
