Gangtok: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang released Chocolate Mahseer fish into the Rangeet river on Sunday, October 11. He performed the act during the Chirbirey River Fest near Jorethang. The move aims to protect the state's aquatic biodiversity and preserve native species. Ministers, MLAs, and local officials joined the CM at the riverbank ranching site.
Tamang spent the second day of the festival pushing for better management of freshwater resources. He argued that the state needs to balance local traditions with modern sustainable practices. The festival serves as a platform to boost tourism and highlight the cultural identity of nearby communities. Officials believe this brings people together through shared heritage.
The Chief Minister identified clear economic opportunities for the region. He suggested that hybrid fish varieties could stabilize local livelihoods and improve regional food security. "The introduction and development of hybrid fish varieties, particularly hybrid mahseer and other improved fish strains where suitable, can contribute to local livelihoods, food security, and sustainable fish farming," he said.
The event also shines a light on hidden tourist spots across the state. Organizers combined river-focused activities with cultural programs to attract visitors. They want to encourage responsible tourism while keeping the environment intact.
