Gangtok: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang handed out financial aid to 1,169 mothers in Rhenock on Saturday, October 3. The distribution occurred at a ceremony in Titribotey, Rorathang. It fell under the state Aama Sashaktikaran Yojana, an initiative designed to bolster family support and female economic status.
Tamang, serving as the local MLA, spoke to the crowd about maternal influence on community health. He warned recipients to manage their money wisely. He said, "Empowering women would contribute to stronger families and communities." Productive use of these funds could lead to future recognition under the Aama Samman Puraskar and Pragatisheel Aama Puraskar awards.
The current scheme supports 32,000 mothers across 31 constituencies and Sangha. Big changes are coming. Tamang confirmed the government will expand coverage to 50,000 beneficiaries by 2027, targeting 1,500 mothers per constituency. He also cautioned against abusing multiple government programs.
Commissioner-cum-Secretary Jigmee Dorjee Bhutia noted the program aims for long-term self-reliance. Officials highlighted other state efforts like the Aama Sahayog Yojana, Bahini Yojana, widow pensions, and HPV vaccinations. The event also honored a local 16-member family for promoting demographic sustainability. A health camp provided medical services on-site to wrap up the day.
