Itanagar: Monsoon floods in Arunachal Pradesh are carving up the land. The Siang River has chewed through 600 metres of riverbank in the Mebo Sub-Division, destroying 10,800 square metres of farmland as of August 3. The Kongkin Wet Rice Cultivation fields, a lifeline for local families, bore the brunt of this destruction.
Pasighat Additional Deputy Commissioner Pebika Lego led a team of officials to Borguli village on Monday to survey the wreckage. The group included Mebo ADC Nancy Yirang, Namsing Circle Officer Toimi Tagi, Water Resources Department Assistant Engineer Bani Langkam, and Borguli Gaon Burah Nogen Yirang. They promised to submit a detailed report to authorities while drafting proposals for flood mitigation.
Mebo MLA Oken Tayeng ordered the site inspection after years of mounting losses. Villages including Borguli, Seram, Namsing, Mer, Gadum, and Sigar face recurring devastation that wipes out both homes and crops. Tayeng is now pushing for a permanent fix to stop the cycle. He stated, "The project would require support from both the state and central governments to safeguard the lives, livelihoods and farmlands of people living in the Lower Mebo and Monggu Banggo areas."
The legislator wants a massive flood protection embankment built from Sigar to Mer. Without help, the river will keep taking more land.
