Shillong: East Khasi Hills officials are moving to manage the city's stray dog population. Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal confirmed Friday that 100 dogs in Laban and nearby zones are slated for sterilization. This pilot project will run for four months. The administration is currently registering the animals and seeking state funds to cover the high costs of a broader rollout.
Baranwal noted that crews have already finished six rounds of vaccinations. Pet owners must register their animals and hang signs outside their homes warning of the dogs inside. The district is also cracking down on safety. Hospitals must now report all dog bites to the police. Baranwal warned, "Dog owners may face legal action if their pets bite members of the public."
Meanwhile, the district is prepping for the Cherry Blossom Festival on November 20 and 21. Officials recently inspected the New Shillong Highland Grounds at Mawkhanu. They are mapping out traffic flow, crowd control, and general infrastructure for the two-day event. Popular acts from outside the state will headline the performances.
In other news, Australian Olympic gold medalist Glynnis Nunn stopped by the 16th International Shillong Shopping Carnival on Friday. The 1984 heptathlon winner visited the Madan Iewrynghep grounds in Laitumkhrah with her husband, Mike Kendall. Nunn currently serves as the Director of Sportality Pvt. Ltd.
