Shillong: Shillong Traffic Police launched a new crackdown dubbed Operation Free Flow on July 24 to fix the city's crippling congestion. Haphazard parking along narrow roads and busy commercial strips frequently bottlenecks traffic and traps emergency vehicles. Limited road space combined with a surge in private cars makes the situation worse every day.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed the initiative in a Friday press release. Police formed a dedicated Shillong Traffic Enforcement Team to target motorists who park in no-parking zones or block traffic lanes. Officers will enforce rules strictly, though they will grant exceptions for medical emergencies.
SP Syiem stated, "The objective is not merely to penalise violators but also to promote responsible parking behaviour, improve traffic discipline and ensure safer, more efficient roads for all." The department demands better compliance from drivers to reduce gridlock. Authorities hope the move restores order to the city streets and clears the way for everyone.
