Seventeen Major Central Infrastructure Projects Stalled in Meghalaya

Shillong: Seventeen key central infrastructure projects in Meghalaya are currently at a complete standstill, according to a recent monitoring report from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region. Despite significant budget allocations and the broader goals of the Act East policy, these initiatives have failed to achieve any physical progress on the ground.

The May 2026 report labels these developments as non-starters. The stalled portfolio includes three projects under the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North East Region and six schemes managed by the North Eastern Council. Additionally, six infrastructure developments intended to improve water, sanitation, and social services under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme have not yet begun, alongside two critical road projects.

The state currently manages 81 ongoing projects under various ministry programmes. Of these, only 14 have been completed, marking a success rate of roughly 17 percent. While 32 other schemes have reached the 75 percent completion threshold, the stagnation of nearly a quarter of the total portfolio reflects a deeper inefficiency. The report indicates these projects are officially listed as under implementation, but the lack of activity threatens the state's growth prospects. The government identified these initiatives as non-starters despite being officially listed as under implementation.
