Shillong: A burning tyre blocked a road in Mawblei early Saturday. Police arrived at 1.30 am to clear the scene. No suspects were present when they reached the site. Madanriting police station personnel doused the flames. They discovered a cardboard note left beside the blaze.
The note carried a blunt warning in the local language: "Wat kemkulmar ïoh kan pluh." Officials translated the message to: "Don't arrest randomly or it will burn." Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
The threat follows an ultimatum from the Khasi Students' Union. On Friday, the union gave the state government three days to arrest individuals accused of vandalizing vehicles and attacking people. Those clashes occurred during a public hearing for a proposed Shree Cement Ltd limestone mining project at Lum Syrman in East Jaintia Hills. Union leaders claim authorities are targeting their members without evidence while ignoring attackers at the hearing. The union decided to push these demands during a Friday meeting, citing previous talks held at the Secretariat on August 26.
