Imphal: Joint security forces arrested two Kangleipak Communist Party (City Meitei) cadres during search operations in Manipur. Yaikhom Abhinash Meetei and Wahengbam Kiran Singh fell into custody. Officers swept through the Imphal East and Bishnupur districts to pull the men in.
The teams seized a massive stockpile of weapons. Recoveries included an AK-47, pistols, and mortar shells. Near the northern side of Lamdan and Geljang, officers combed the brush under the jurisdiction of the Loktak Police Station. They pulled an AK-47 with two magazines, a DBBL gun, a country-made sniper rifle, and three 9 mm pistols from the dirt. The haul also contained one 51 HE mortar shell, two 36 HE hand grenades, a tube launcher, anti-riot grenades, and various ammunition rounds.
Tension boiled over elsewhere. The 40 Assam Rifles detained four farmers from Hungpung village on July 25. The men were working their paddy fields when they were grabbed. Women from Sharkaphung village launched immediate protests and blocked roads in response.
High-level talks ended the standoff. The Tangkhul Naga Long met with Assam Rifles DIG Brigadier Amit Kumar Sharma to negotiate. Officials released the four men safely on July 26. Despite the outcome, the Tangkhul Naga Long issued a statement regarding the incident. The group stated that they "strongly condemned the initial detention and alleged harassment by security personnel."
