Shillong: Locals near the Inter-State Bus Terminus in Mawiong are raising alarms about illegal activity. The site transforms into a hub for public nuisance after dark. Most inter-state buses clear out by 5:30 pm each day. The empty terminal then draws groups to its dark corners to drink alcohol.
The facility sat closed for two years before reopening earlier this year. It is already falling apart. Locals claim the site needs immediate repairs and better management. Security remains a major point of contention for those living nearby. One local said, "Even though there are one or two security guards, the area does not feel safe, especially for women, after sunset."
Residents are pushing for round-the-clock security at the site. They fear for the safety of the public once bus operations cease for the night.
