Shillong: Young volunteers in Meghalaya are gaining emergency skills through the Yuva Aapda Mitra Scheme. These trainees learn search and rescue, casualty handling, and evacuation procedures. The state wants dependable responders ready to work alongside government agencies during accidents and disasters.
Practice meets reality. During the recent Durand Cup, volunteers supported medical and emergency operations at the venue. They stayed on standby throughout the matches to handle stretchers and medical response tasks. Volunteers collaborated with the police, State Disaster Response Force, and Fire and Emergency Services to monitor the Operations Centre.
The scheme ensures training moves beyond classrooms. "The success of the Yuva Aapda Mitra initiative lies in translating training into practical action," according to reports on the project. These efforts aim to build a disciplined network of citizens across the state.
Beyond sports, volunteers assist during Independence Day celebrations, festivals, and school programs. They support medical teams and coordinate safety measures at various public gatherings. This consistent deployment allows young participants to gain experience while strengthening community safety throughout Meghalaya.
