Itanagar: Researchers in Arunachal Pradesh have discovered a rare yellow puffball mushroom in the Longding district, marking a potential first for the region. The specimen was documented on June 4 during a field survey in Zedua village by a team from the ICAR Krishi Vigyan Kendra.
Scientists have preliminarily identified the fungus as Bovista colorata due to its spherical shape and bright yellow appearance. Dr. Deep Narayan Mishra, who led the observation, noted that the find highlights the vast, largely unexplored fungal diversity of the Eastern Himalayas.
The research team emphasized that further study is needed before the classification is official. "Researchers, however, have stressed that detailed microscopic analysis and molecular testing are required to confirm the exact classification," the report stated.
Puffball mushrooms play a vital role in forest ecosystems by acting as decomposers that recycle nutrients into the soil. While some puffball species are known for their nutritional and medicinal potential, experts issued a strong warning against consuming any wild mushrooms. Many toxic fungi closely mimic edible varieties during their early growth stages, making professional scientific identification essential for safety.
