Volunteers clear two tonnes of trash from Yagamso River

Itanagar: Volunteers pulled more than two tonnes of trash from the Yagamso river in Itanagar on Sunday, August 2. The community-led effort targeted the river and its banks near Chandranagar to restore the waterway. Organizers collected exactly 2,160 kg of refuse.

The Youth Mission for Clean River and the Abralow Memorial Multipurpose Society ran the event. The Itanagar Smart City Development Corporation Ltd provided backup. Teams scoured the riverbed to clear the debris.

A post-cleanup audit exposed the nature of the mess. The trash pile consisted of single-use plastics, packaging, construction waste, old clothes, and common household garbage. These findings point to routine littering and poor domestic waste disposal habits.

Keyom Doni, vice-chairman of the Youth Mission for Clean River, explained that the data will guide future protection efforts. He noted that the group intends to hold these drives often. "The audit allows us to move beyond simply removing waste to identifying what is polluting the river and why," Doni said.

The group will share these findings with local residents and officials. They aim to push for tougher management practices to keep the river clean. More clean-up events are already in the works.
