Imphal: Rajeev Singh Thakur took charge as the new Chief Secretary of Manipur this Tuesday. He replaces Puneet Kumar Goel, who retired from the post on August 31. The transition follows a shakeup in state leadership.

Thakur is a 1995-batch IAS officer from the Rajasthan cadre. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet greenlit his move to the Manipur cadre via inter-cadre deputation. The Department of Personnel and Training pushed the plan to cut his central deputation short.

Regulators granted a special exemption for the move. He will hold the position until he retires on June 30, 2029. Manipur officials hope this change will stabilize the administration as the state works to "restore peace and normalcy" after a long period of ethnic strife.
