Phek Targets Leprosy Elimination by 2027

Kohima: Health officials met in Phek on June 29 to map out a strategy to wipe out leprosy by 2027. State Leprosy Officer Dr. Ruokuohelie Rutsa led the review at the Chief Medical Officer's office. He told staff to ramp up awareness and focus on early detection. The disease is beatable.

Dr. Rutsa pressed the team to ensure every patient gets free treatment to stop the spread. "The disease is curable through early diagnosis and proper treatment," he said. Field staff must now hit the streets for active community screening.

The plan relies on Village Health Nutrition Days and local partnerships with village councils and nurses. Official Hokito pushed for deeper engagement with ASHA workers to find cases early. The district also rolled out a new monthly reporting system to keep the state updated by the 6th of each month.

District Extension Officer Thejasetuo Paphino trained the team on NIKUSTH. This digital registry handles patient tracking and keeps tabs on treatment progress. The meeting set the pace for a long campaign to reach the 2027 goal.
