Phek officials push to wipe out leprosy by 2027

Kohima: Phek health officials met on June 29 to map out the final push against leprosy. The district aims to wipe out the disease by 2027. State Leprosy Officer Dr. Ruokuohelie Rutsa led the session at the Chief Medical Officer's office. He urged staff to step up their game.

"The disease is curable through early diagnosis and proper treatment," Dr. Rutsa said. He demanded universal access to free medicine to break the chain of transmission. The meeting focused on making sure no patient slips through the cracks.

NLEP official Hokito pushed for active screening in every community. Staff must now lean on village councils, nurses, and local health workers to find cases early. The plan includes using Village Health Nutrition Days and public events to get the word out.

The district is tightening its data collection to keep pace. Workers must submit reports to the state by the 6th of each month. Officials also reviewed the NIKUSTH digital registry. They use this tool to track patients and monitor how well treatments work.
