Kohima: Health officials gathered in Phek on June 29 to map out a strategy to wipe out leprosy by 2027. State Leprosy Officer Dr. Ruokuohielie Rutsa led the session at the CMO Conference Hall, bringing in staff from the National Leprosy Eradication Programme to refine local tactics.
Dr. Rutsa pressed the team to ramp up awareness efforts immediately. He reminded the staff that early action stops the disease in its tracks. "The disease is curable through early diagnosis and timely treatment," Rutsa said. The plan relies on providing free care while stopping the spread of the infection before it takes hold.
Teams are now tasked with reaching out through village councils and health events. Nurses, ASHAs, and medical officers must coordinate to find new cases early. Officials are also pushing the SPARSH Leprosy Awareness Campaign to keep the public informed year-round.
Technical updates are also hitting the ground. PMW Vizakielie Theunuo rolled out a new monthly reporting system to speed up data collection. Meanwhile, DEO Thejasetuo Paphino demonstrated the NIKUSTH digital registry. The tool tracks patients and monitors how well treatments are working in real time.
