Nutrition Fairs Launch in Jirang as State Projects Advance

Shillong: The Indian Institute of Public Health (IIPH) Shillong launched its first Community Health and Nutrition Mela at New Jirang Playground on September 28. Nearly 500 residents from an eight-village cluster attended the event under the Community-Based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) project. The cluster includes Centre Village, Iosohksang, Umsohpanan, Umlakro, Wahsynon, Nonglum, Umkhawai, and Umiong.

Acting Syiem of Hima Jirang, Ronel McDonald Wahlang, opened the event. Officials from the Health, Social Welfare, and Education departments, the Meghalaya State Rural Livelihoods Society, the C&RD Block Office, and village headmen attended. Project coordinator Alice Lyngdoh led sessions on diet and recovery. Families received tracking tools. They handed out 100 Mid-Upper Arm Circumference tapes to parents.

The pilot program reaches Jirang, Mawkynrew, and Dadenggre blocks. More melas follow in Jirang on October 6, 9, 13, and 17. In other state news, the Estimates Committee of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly directed the Public Works Department to speed up the Gasuapara polytechnic project. Construction is only 68 percent finished. Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem also reviewed National Games preparations. Syiem remains optimistic about the timeline. "There will be challenges, but we can resolve all challenges and host the Games successfully," Syiem said.

Legal professionals also made moves. The All India Lawyers Union held its first state conference on September 26 at the Meghalaya Cooperative Apex Bank hall. They elected a 34-member committee. Advocate M.F. Qureshi serves as president. Meanwhile, the Voice of the People Party Ri-Bhoi unit distanced itself from Dwet Kharumnuid. President L. Masharing confirmed Kharumnuid holds no official party role. Finally, the Betasing Social Forestry Range held fire-fighting training for students and village leaders to address growing woodland fire risks.
