Kohima: The NSCN (Khango-Vusshe) group is sounding the alarm over a new oil deal. Government officials from Assam, Nagaland, and the Union signed the tripartite memorandum on June 11, 2026. This pact targets crude oil and natural resource development within the Disputed Area Belt. The group claims these projects cannot be viewed as simple business moves.
Land disputes are complex. The NSCN warned that these agreements affect history, identity, and the political rights of local people. They pointed to Article 371A of the Indian Constitution as a primary defense for Naga customary law. According to the group, "These protections are not symbolic provisions but fundamental safeguards reflecting the unique historical and political circumstances of the Naga people."
The organization insists that true progress requires the participation and consent of landowners. They maintain that the Naga people have never given up their ancestral rights. Any effort to leverage these resources for strategic or political gain will meet with serious pushback. The group called on the state and central governments to act with total transparency, reminding officials that development should not bypass historical truths or existing political rights.
