Guwahati: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) finished repairs on flood-damaged tracks in the Tinsukia Division. The work focused on the Simaluguri section in Sibsagar district. NFR General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava checked the bridges and infrastructure himself to confirm the line could handle traffic again. Safety remains the top priority.
Floodwaters forced local families to move onto the tracks. Displaced people, children, and their livestock are currently living on or near the rail corridor. To prevent electrocution from overhead power lines, the railway is forcing all trains through this zone to run on diesel locomotives. Management will keep this rule in place until residents leave the tracks and water levels drop.
Train schedules changed to reflect these safety protocols. The Guwahati-Dibrugarh Nagaland Express, the Guwahati-Ledo Intercity Express, and the Rangiya-Ledo Intercity Express will detour through Moranhat. The Lumding-Tinsukia DEMU and the Tinsukia-Jorhat Town Passenger also follow this diverted path. Long-distance transit remains rerouted through North Lakhimpur, Rangapara North, and Rangiya for now.
NFR continues to run special trains to bridge the gaps in connectivity across Upper Assam. The company stated, "the temporary measure has been adopted to minimise the risk of electrocution associated with overhead electric lines and to safeguard people sheltering near the tracks until normal conditions are restored." Officials will only restore electric operations once the area clears.
