Kohima: MLA Wangpang Konyak inaugurated a new infrastructure project at the Kohima Orphanage Home on July 15. Funded by the North Eastern Council, the development cost Rs 360.45 lakh. It provides modern dormitories for boys and girls. The Social Welfare Department spearheaded the effort.
Construction started June 10, 2022. It finished July 31, 2025. Contractor M/S DAKO and Co completed the work. The ground floor features a library, a kitchen, a dining room, and storage. The upper levels house bedrooms, wash areas, and facilities for people with disabilities.
Konyak praised late founder Zaputuo Angami. She started the home back in 1973. He called her service a divine will. The MLA thanked the NEC for their financial backing. He noted that the home provides more than just a roof. He said, "It is not about just giving home but providing care, education and healing touch to homeless children."
Secretary Limawabang Jamir spoke at the event. He noted that the home has helped over 650 children since its inception. Former residents now serve in the Indian Army or hold government jobs. Jamir emphasized the government's commitment to the institution. He promised the department would keep supporting the orphanage to ensure no child lacks shelter.
The inaugural ceremony included a dedicatory prayer from State chaplain Rev Izieteilung Terieng. Proprietor Neibanuo thanked the Social Welfare Department for its ongoing aid. The project stands as a firm investment in the future of the children at the home.
