Kohima: Northeast Frontier Railway officials plan to finish the 78.42-km Dimapur-Kohima rail line by 2029. Ashish Bansal, General Manager of Northeast Frontier Railway Construction, inspected the work sites this week. He pushed engineers to keep the project moving. Bansal ordered teams to focus on safety and precision.
The rail line covers ground in the Karbi Anglong district of Assam and the Chumoukedima and Kohima districts of Nagaland. It features eight stations: Dhansiri, Dhansiripar, Shokhuvi, Molvom, Pherima, Piphema, Menguzuma, and Zubza. Crews finished construction on Dhansiri, Shokhuvi, and Molvom. The Dhansiri-Shokhuvi section opened in October 2021. The Shokhuvi-Molvom section followed in March 2025.
Trains now run between Shokhuvi, Guwahati, and Naharlagun. Workers face tough geography on the remaining sections. They must finish 20 tunnels stretching over 31,169 metres. The design includes 27 major bridges and 149 minor bridges. Teams use modern methods to drill through the rock. Bansal insisted on "maintaining the pace of work, ensuring close coordination among all stakeholders and completing the project within the targeted timeframe while upholding the highest standards of safety and quality."
The project connects Kohima to the national network for the first time. Officials expect a boost for tourism and local markets. The state will finally have better access to healthcare and education.
