Itanagar: Researchers have identified a new butterfly species, Chonala albistricta, within the challenging terrain of Arunachal Pradesh. Found in the Mayodia Pass of the Lower Dibang Valley, the discovery represents a significant milestone for global lepidopterology. The findings were formally published in the international journal Zootaxa, classifying the insect as the second species of its rare genus to be recorded in India.
Commonly referred to as the Narrow-banded Wall, the butterfly earned its name from the irregular white band on its forewing. While the species bears a resemblance to the Chumbi Wall, scientists confirmed its unique identity through detailed analysis of its morphology, wing patterns, and male genital structures. The genus Chonala, which experienced a century of limited research, has now grown to include ten known species globally.
Reflecting on the significance of the region, researchers stated that the "discovery highlights the unexplored biodiversity potential of the Eastern Himalayas." This addition to the scientific record underscores the ecological importance of the high-altitude landscape and marks a successful turn in the renewed investigation of the Chonala genus.
