Kohima: Nagaland hosted a series of awareness programmes on July 27 and 28, 2026, as part of the national Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari initiative. The campaign, titled Catch the Rain, aims to build water security across the state. Town councils in Dimapur, Atoizu, and Chiephobozou led the events to encourage residents and traders to adopt sustainable water practices.
East Dimapur Town Council held a session at the Purana Bazar market. Ward 10 councillor Krishna Mech said the location was chosen for its high foot traffic. The current market facility lacks harvesting gear, but the council will install water storage tanks at the new complex currently under construction. Mech plans to expand these efforts into schools and local colonies. "Together we can turn every rainfall into a resource and every citizen into a water champion," she said.
Atoizu Town Council met at DBs Hall to discuss collective responsibility for water management. Inali Yesca chaired the session, which featured an invocation by Youth Pastor Ghunato Achumi. Deputy Chairman Ivuka Katty called for practical measures to fight water scarcity. Junior Engineer Liza Sumi, from the Zunheboto Water Resources Department, outlined technical methods for harvesting to both households and local institutions. Extra Assistant Commissioner Dr. Samuel Akho Konyak P urged attendees to carry the message back to their families and churches. The event closed with a prayer by Sumi Totimi Loka president Tozheli Awomi.
At the Chiephobozou Town Council Hall, ADC Vekusheyi Rhakho noted that while Nagaland enjoys high rainfall, local supply remains inconsistent. He pointed to the indigenous Zabo system of Kikrüma village as a model for modern conservation. Junior Engineer Kethosenou Usou from the PHED provided instruction on groundwater recharge and the use of harvested water for drinking and farming. Participants discussed local water shortages and ways to build a community-led movement for sustainable use.
