Kohima: Nagaland Police hit the streets of Kohima today. Hundreds joined a 5km run from High School Junction to the Police Headquarters to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The event aimed to unite the region against substance misuse under the banner of choosing life over narcotics.
ADGP Renchamo P Kikon flagged off the race. Participants took a formal pledge to shun illegal substances and support a drug-free future for the state. They committed to spreading the word to help youth reach their creative potential instead of falling into addiction.
DGP Rupin Sharma sounded the alarm on the state's rising drug accessibility. He pushed for a shift in how the community handles recovery. Sharma noted that religious guidance has its place, but warned that addiction requires actual medical care. He noted, "We will create awareness about the ill effects of drug abuse by encouraging every person, especially the youth so that the youth of India can live drug free and they can become creative and important members of the society."
Infrastructure for rehabilitation remains thin. Sharma suggested tapping into the pool of unemployed psychology graduates to staff better treatment programs. He urged citizens to tip off police about trafficking rings, promising total secrecy for anyone who steps forward to help.
The race saw competitive results across several groups. Shianjiu T and Songmo P took the top spots in the men's and women's open categories, while Vilaseto and P. Kahuto led the youth and veteran divisions. Winners walked away with cash prizes, though the real prize remains the push for a cleaner state.
